Exploration of the history and culture of Chinese immigrants in the U.S. through reading of literary and other cultural texts and appreciation of movies. Topics include the history of Chinese immigration in America, the culture and tradition of Chinese immigrants and the interaction of Chinese culture with other cultures in America. Students identify some main issues involved in the discussion of the history and culture of Chinese in America and gain an understanding of the current issues in education and cultural realms. Designed to enhance English proficiency through reading of contemporary works. Through reading and discussion, students develop language skills, in addition to gain new perspectives of history and culture of Chinese America.

The course will explore the history and culture of Chinese immigrants in the U.S. through examining primary source documents, survey data, journal articles, fiction and nonfiction books. Topics include the history of Chinese immigration in America, contemporary Chinese American society, the culture and tradition of the Chinese immigrants, and current issues affecting Chinese students in the United States. Students will learn some key words and concepts involved in the discussion of the history and culture of Chinese in the United States and gain an understanding of Chinese immigrants in America. This course is designed to enhance English language proficiency through studying of resources relating to the topics of history and culture. Through reading, discussion, presentation and writing an essay, students develop language skills and gain new
perspectives.

You will read at least one book about the history, society, culture, or life experience of Chinese immigrants in the United States. (You may choose a scholarly book, a non-fiction book, or a novel. The selected book must be in English.)
You are required to participate in class discussions.
You are going to form a study group and do a presentation.
Your grade will be composed of scores from participation in class
discussions, a group project/presentation and an essay, as detailed below:
a. Participation in class discussion 30%
b. Group project/presentation 20%
c. Essay 50%
