Academic English Writing (AEW) is an Academic Writing general education course designed for English Language
Learners matriculating through their various undergraduate programs. The course is intended to make students aware of
formal writing processes by preparing students to interact with, comprehend and produce academic English writing.
Students will invent theses, demonstrate clear written communication with sufficient language mastery to make their ideas
clear, persuasive, compelling, engaging. Students will examine model essays that demonstrate form, format, and technique.
Stemming from the various course readings, students will write academic essays that are organized and coherent. These
essays will be strengthened by peer-reviewing and self-editing. |

Academic English Writing (AEW) is an Academic Writing general education course designed for English Language
Learners matriculating through their various undergraduate programs. The course is intended to make students aware of formal writing processes by preparing students to interact with, comprehend and produce academic English writing. Students will invent theses, demonstrate clear written communication with sufficient language mastery to make their ideas clear, persuasive, compelling, engaging. Students will examine model essays that demonstrate form, format, and technique. Stemming from the various course readings, students will write academic essays that are organized and coherent. These essays will be strengthened by peer-reviewing and self-editing.
Week 1 short essay Due Day 6
Week 2 long essay Due Day 11
Week 3 narrative essay Due Day 14
Week 3 presentation. We will have one oral presentation at the end of the course. It
will consist of a speaking exam given by your professor. The exam will be a narrative
discourse about research writing. Due at the end of course.
This class will meet two hours each day for 4 days per week for 4 full weeks. There will be a mixture of lecture, discussion, in class writing, homework, 3 major essays and 1 oral presentation. Students will improve their written English skills through reading and writing activities. Homework and in-class activities will also provide opportunities to enhance skills with English composition proficiency.
