教学大纲 This course aims to help students:
Understand the basic tenets of journalism and communication
Familiarize with the media landscape in and outside China
Develop the ability to distinguish between news, propaganda, publicity, advertising, entertainment and raw information
Understand ethics in communications
Develop critical thinking and open-minded inquiry through research, analysis and reporting
Explore the perils and promise of New Media
Probe the problems and prospects of how China communicates with the outside world
Overall assignment throughout the course:

Daily routine: First 10-15 minutes of class time typically open for sharing of current events and brief discussions. Occasional quiz will also be conducted to start the session. This will be a seminar course combining traditional teaching methods with lectures, discussions, a field trip and multimedia. Students will be expected to participate in discussions, take occasional quizzes, do an assigned report on a book or video, and submit a short multimedia project to be presented in the last session.

Week 12: Presentations
This course offers a general overview of journalism and communications to be presented by media practitioners through practical experiences, insights and perspectives.  The class will analyze distinctive features and impact of various media: print, TV, radio, online media, social media, blogs, podcasting. With a thorough understanding of the media landscape, the class will take a comparative look into the role of the media, the impact of technological innovation in the way news is presented and consumed. The class will also look at how China is perceived in and outside China through the prism of the media.

The course is planned to be finished within 12 weeks, 2 class hours for every week, plus 4 hours of fieldwork. Students are expected to submit a multi-media research project in which they will present their positions on one of the main themes covered during the course.
