中文简介 本课程的基本形式是通过排演戏剧来学习戏剧。本课程将通过一系列简单的练习,让学生掌握如何清楚有效地进行语言表达,以及如何在舞台上运用语言进行表演。重点是如何在舞台上运用莎士比亚精妙绝伦又富于挑战性的语言,借此让学生对莎士比亚的戏剧有一个更加全面深入的了解。本课程的内容包括排演两部莎士比亚的戏剧,《李尔王》和《暴风雨》,以及其它一些剧目的片段。
英文简介 Drama Acting is a course in which students can “learning drama by doing drama”. Through a series of simple exercises, students will learn to speak language clearly and to effect, as well as how to move on stage using that language. Drama Acting is intended to give students a more complete understanding of Shakespeare’s plays by focusing on how to use his brilliant but challenging language on stage. The course will deal primarily with two of Shakespeare’s plays, KING LEAR and THE TEMPEST, as well as scenes and sections of other of his plays.

DRAMA ACTING –WEEKS ONE THROUGH THREE: INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE OF THE WEST
A. A brief look at Western Theatre history. (LECTURE)
B. A brief look at Western acting styles and acting training. (LECTURE)
C. Different forms of Western theatre. (LECTURE & MOVEMENT)

WEEKS FOUR & FIVE:  CHOOSING THE SCENES TO PERFORM – Students will be divided into performance groups and students and teacher together will look a series of short British and American plays and scenes in English but with Chinese translations and select from those, scenes and short plays to be rehearsed with an eye toward performance by the semester’s end.  

WEEKS SIX & SEVEN: REHEARSAL TO PERFORMANCE: Using his own play, REVEL’S WORLD OF SHAKESPEARE, in English but with a Chinese translation provided for additional understanding, Joseph Graves will lead the students through the process he took when rehearsing that play. Students will observe and also perform bits and pieces of the play as he leads them through the rehearsal process of that play.

(Two evenings of week seven students will be given free tickets to a public performance of REVEL’S WORLD OF SHAKESPEARE at the Qinglan Theatre in Beijing,  enabling the students to see how the rehearsal process translates into actual performance.)     

WEEKS EIGHT AND NINE: USING THE SHORT PLAYS AND SCENES CHOSEN FROM WEEKS FOUR AND FIVE, TEACHER WILL GUIDE STUDENTS THROUGH THE FOLLOWING:
A. Text analysis (How to study the text of the plays and scenes with an eye toward performance. How to break a scene down into the smaller units of beats.)
B. The rehearsal process – a further look at how as play is generally rehearsed in the West including both lecture for and practice with students.
C. How actors should relate to directors, what and what to expect from a director both lecture and practice.

WEEKS TEN THROUGH ELEVEN: STAGING OF THE SHORT PLAYS AND SCENES:  Students will both observe other students and the director/teacher working as well as work on their own scenes under director’s/teacher’s guidance.

WEEK TWELVE: STAGING OF SHORT PLAYS AND SCENES: The process begun during week eleven will continue until all short plays and scenes have been roughly staged.

WEEK THRITEEN: ALL SCENES/SHROT PLAYS WILL HAVE BEEN ROUGHLY STAGED. The teacher will lead the students through the process of refining the plays and scenes, focusing on vocal and physical articulations (Voice and Movement) of the scenes and short plays. Students will both participate and observe other students at work.

WEEK FOURTEEN: THE ABOVE DESCRIBED PROCESS WILL CONTINUE. By the day’s end all the scenes and short plays will have been rehearsed and polished.

WEEK FIFTEEN & SIXTEEN: A REVIEW OF WHAT HAS BEEN LEARNED AND HOW IT APPLIES TO THE PREFORMANCE OF THE STUDENTS’ SCENES AND SHORT PLAYS. THE PROCESS WILL INCLUDE FURTHER REHEARSAL BASED ON THIS REVIEW.

FINAL EXAMINATION: PERFORMANCES OF SCENES AND SHORT PLAYS, BASED ON THE MATERIAL LEARNED THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER’S WORK.
莎士比亚戏剧研读以课堂讨论结合讲解的方式进行,占整个课程的20%左右。舞台表演基本训练以课堂实践的方式进行,占20%左右。戏剧排练和演出以实践的方式进行,占60%左右。
期末考试以戏剧演出的形式进行,主要作为学生学习成果的展示,表演水平高低不作为成绩评定的主要依据。出勤占30%,课堂参与占50%,期末考试占20%。
TESTS:

Each class will involve a review test of material covered in the previous class.

There will be a comprehensive mid-term oral test dealing with the material covered up to that point in the semester.

The final examination will find students participating in a public performance of the selected scenes or short plays rehearsed during the semester.

GRADES:

Students’ grades will be based on consistent attendance of, and participation in, classes, and on daily, mid-term and final test scores.

STUDY MATERIALS:

The students will be provided with 3 dozen short plays from Classical and contemporary Western drama in the English original but with Chinese translations.
