中文简介 本课程以英美散文历史发展为线索,通过对17-20世纪初英美散文的一些经典节选的阅读和讲评,使中国学生对英美散文的文体演变和语言特点有个基本的了解和把握,大幅度地提高英文的阅读能力和对英文所载负的英美文化意识的理解力和感悟力,同时也对各个历史时期英美重大历史事件和重要思想状况有个基本的了解,为学生未来更高层次的英文写作和文学翻译打好基础。这是一门以研习英文以达到了解西方文化之目的,从而锻造英文表现力的基础课程。课程以对英文散文的节选解读和评析为主,为使学生在本课程中强化英语(文)的各种技能,课程教学语言主要为英语,辅以少量的中文重点解释。课程中或有课堂讨论,学生可根据自己需求能力选用英语或汉语进行提问和讨论。
英文简介 This course is formulated to meet the need of the undergraduates’ in-depth need in their study of English language and its cultural manifestation. With history of English prose writing and its cultural implications in perspective, this course attempts at an intensive reading of some 100 experts from English and American prose writings beginning in the sixteenth century up to the twentieth century. Students will be activated to trace some important changes of English prose style in the selected periods while foster in them the linguistic sensibility and the historical-cultural meanings that go with it. By historicizing texts segments for stylistic changes and cultural meanings, students will substantially improve their reading capacity and achieve basic understanding of some important ideas in Anglo-American letters, history and culture, which would surely pave the way for their subsequent English language use at a higher academic level, particularly their writing skills and translation practices. The course will mainly conducted in English with classroom discussion and guided presentations on the part of the students (40%). It is expected that by reading intensively some monumental discourses, the students would be able to upgrade their English in a historical context and at the same time, enjoy what language can offer about its artistic anomaly. A final examination that carries 60% of the total course evaluation will be set for the completion of the course.

教学大纲 通过本课程的学习,为学生西方文化素质奠定基础,对英语语言的历史和散文发展史有个初步的了解,锻炼出初步的英语语言的敏感和鉴赏能力, 为进一步用英语在自己的学业生涯中的应用提供了人文理解和表达的条件。 同时,本课程也包括部分英美名篇散文的翻译内容,这将对学生的中西文化综合素养产生激励作用,使学生的文化身份和汉语思维和表达得到良好的锻炼。
课程以英文讲授分析文本为主,辅以学生课堂讨论和巩固练习。预计完成对100篇左右的篇章阅读 与评讲。要求学生课前自行阅读指定节选并提出问题,在上课时就个节选的语言风格和行文特点以及时代内容进行研习。本课程32课时,预计分段完成以下内容的阅读和讲评:

3. 节选理解题(阅读3段所学内容以外的节选,要求理解选择回答;用英文进行概述内容(原文1/3)及
