英文简介 Contemporary (20th Century to Present) American Novels is an introduction to the novel form in contemporary American literature. Students will read and study three novels focusing on characterization, plot development, setting, themes and style in a cultural and historical context.  In conjunction with each novel study, supportive essays will be reviewed to enhance the theme of each novel.  Auxiliary course content will include literary devices, reading and comprehension skills, and recommendations for further reading of American novels.

教学大纲 1. Students will read three American contemporary (20th Century to present) novels.
2. Students will read related essays related to theme development in each novel.
3. Students will study literary conventions as they relate to contemporary novels.
4. Students will demonstrate a proficiency in comprehension, literary analysis and vocabulary through class discussions and written evaluations.
5. Students will analyze personal reading preferences and habits and reflect on life-long reading habits.
The course will focus on three American novels—The Alchemist, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, and To Kill a Mockingbird.  Through the use of PowerPoint presentations, large and small group discussions, and individual projects the class will explore the themes of each novel as they relate to the human story. The larger objective of the course will be to foster interest in American literature (particularly contemporary novels) for further study. The curriculum will also include the study of literary terms and literary devices.

Students will receive points based on performance on tests, quizzes, homework and class participation. A final grade will be determined based on total points and a standard percentage of the total points earned by each student.
