英文简介 A semester-long course designed to give students a general understanding of the history of British and American Drama while introducing them to the simple techniques of drama performance as a unique and engaging way of understanding Dramatic Literature.

British and American Dramas have been for centuries in the West not only a vitally important part of Western creative literature, but such works have played, and continue to play, an enormous role in the cultural, educational, and often political, development of Western societies. This class seeks to explore those roles and their impacts.

THREE PRIMARY FOCUSES:
The study will divide the semester’s time into three primary focuses related to British and American Drama.
FIRST THIRD OF SEMESTER:
The class will focus on the history and development of British and American Drama from Western Drama’s beginnings in Ancient Greece through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and on to the Elizabethan and Restoration periods following through to contemporary British and American Drama.
SECOND THIRD OF SEMESTER:
The class will focus on six plays by six major British and American playwrights: Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams, Harold Pinter and David Mamet.
LAST THIRD OF SEMESTER:
The class will emphasize the evolution of the English language as such relates specifically to the use of body and voice on stage during the performance of various British and American plays of importance. With primary emphasis on Modern British and American Drama, we will explore how drama has played an enormous role (through both spoken and written English) in the growth and change of the English language over the last 100 years. To that end we will explore one play each of the language-changing playwrights: William Butler Yeats, Thornton Wilder, Samuel Beckett and Sam Shepard.
对于剧目的学习包括课堂讲解、课后阅读和撰写阅读报告、课堂讨论和片段表演。
SPECIFIC WORK FOR STUDENTS
(1) Since Dramatic Literature involves not only words written, but words spoken, and articulated through body movement as well, a part of each class will find students using vocal and movement exercises (such as an actor might use) to feel the impact of language as well as the more obvious hearing and reading of it. In other words we will study, through movement and voice, the fact that Dramatic Literature was born and continues to thrive because of its design to be experienced in a three-fold way: intellectually, emotionally and physically.
(2) Each class will involve not only lecture time by the teacher about specific        dramatic content, but will also engage, encourage and teach students to experience Dramatic Literature in its fullest expressions.
(3) Students will read plays and perform them in rudimentary fashion.
期末考试为学期论文。出勤占20%,课堂参与占20%,阅读报告占20%,学期论文占40%。
TESTS
Each class will involve a short physical and vocal test related to techniques, terms and ideas dealt with in the previous class.
There will be a comprehensive mid-term oral and written test dealing with the material covered up to that point in the semester.
The final examination will find students participating in a public performance of selected scenes from the various British and American plays studied during the semester.
GRADES
Students’ grades will be based on consistent attendance of, and participation in, classes, and on daily, mid-term and final test scores.
