Guided by the spirit of Romanticism, the nineteenth century is one of the most colorful pages in European cultural history. With the rapid growth of urbanization and industrialization, nineteenth-century Europeans experienced an unprecedentedly rich musical life: the industrial revolution stimulated the distribution of scores and the growth of concert halls and opera houses, phenomena that supported and reflected the expansion of bourgeois musical culture. According to the musicologist Richard Taruskin, modern practices such as ticket subscriptions to concert series, concert tours, and arts management originated in the nineteenth century. During this period, the social status of musicians—composers as well as performers—also rose, yet the large number of concerts generated an uneven level of musical quality. This phenomenon shaped the emergence of music criticism, an enterprise that played a crucial role in shaping and cultivating audiences’ tastes. Writing about music was also an important vehicle for nineteenth-century composers, musicians, literati, and philosophers to articulate their aesthetic positions.

1. The Concept of Romanticism
The concept of musical Romanticism was first expressed in E. T. A. Hoffmann’s critical reflections on Joseph Haydn, W. A. Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven, elements of which can be traced back to the eighteenth century. Romantic ideas dominated the nineteenth century and even extended to the early twentieth century with the expressionist music of Arnold Schoenberg. These seemingly “untimely” instances of musical Romanticism make the title “nineteenth-century Romanticism” problematic. Furthermore, European music of the period consists of a myriad of underlying aesthetic concepts, which according to the musicologist Carl Dahlhaus include monumentality, virtuosity, and intimacy. These concepts are expressed in various genres such as the symphony, the program symphony and symphonic poem, art songs, character pieces, chamber music, ballet, and opera (the bel canto style in Italy, grand opera in France, and Wagner’s music dramas in Germany). Combining these concepts often leads to aesthetic tension within individual works. In parallel to Romanticism, nationalism emerged in Eastern and Northern Europe as well as Russia. Nationalist styles formed a dialectical relationship with the more “universal” Romantic style.

2. The Essential Role of History
No composers from previous eras were more aware of “history” than those of the nineteenth century. “Tradition” exerted a complex role in shaping their compositional styles. Different composers expressed distinct attitudes towards tradition: some were quite reserved, whereas others were radical. Beethoven and his works formed a paradigm for composers who held contrasting historiographical views. In fact, the nineteenth century can be understood in terms of Beethoven reception, whether composers followed the Beethovenian model, attempted to surpass it, rejected it, or sought out some combination of these stances. This “Beethoven issue” turned into the most heated aesthetic debate during the century: the controversy between absolute music and program music, which involved Hector Berlioz, Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner, Johannes Brahms, and Eduard Hanslick, among others. Composers who were not directly involved in this dispute, including Frédéric Chopin and Gustav Mahler, were still aware of the relationship between pure music and the use of extramusical elements in enhancing expression and communication.

Because of the diversity of musical styles and the heated debates over aesthetic issues, we need multiple narratives to allow us to appreciate and understand European art music in the Romantic period. This course is arranged thematically according to key aesthetic concepts while also following the historical development of significant figures, styles, and genres.
