Animal Population Dynamics
Goal:  Understanding the patterns of change in animal populations requires self-directed study and a willingness to work at disciplined abstract thinking.  The complexity of real world population behavior eventually overwhelms us all – so we appeal to models (mathematical, conceptual) to help us understand.  Complete or near-complete understanding is not the goal.   My goal in this class is to provide an organized introduction into the language and foundational concepts that support our current understanding of how animal populations behave and interact.  If you are going to master the topic, you will need to take the next steps on your own.

What about the math?  We will use simple math as a tool for understanding changes in populations.  Many of the lecture examples and exam questions will require calculations.  I will work examples of important calculations in class.  That said, we will emphasize understanding the concepts rather than rote calculation.  Be advised, the math (and statistical) background needed to fully understand most current research in animal population biology is intimidating to many (if not most) professional biologists and researchers (including your instructor).  Trite as it sounds, attitude is key.  Decide not to succumb to math anxiety.
