英文简介 Risk assessment is a fundamental tool for making effective decisions in engineering, finance, health and the environment.  Critical thinking is essential for assessing the credibility of information used in risk assessment.  Using examples from many disciplines, this course teaches how to use risk assessment and critical thinking to improve decision making.  In addition, it will offer specific techniques for developing health-based risk limits for pollutants and impurities in air, water, food, and soil.  Also, students will learn key aspects of effective risk management.

教学大纲 Teach skills in 1) assessing the credibility of information, 2) using risk assessment to improve decision-making on health and environmental issues, 3) effectively communicating risk.  The overall goal is to teach students to use risk assessment and critical thinking to help society and the government focus on the most-cost effective solutions to managing the risks of complex environmental problems.
Session 1:  History and Relevance of Risk Assessment
a.History and Relevance of Risk Assessment – Provides a context to risk assessment and its use in modern society.  
b.Toxicology for Risk Assessment – Discusses how toxicology is used for risk assessment purposes.
Session2:
c.Critical Thinking and Health – How to use critical thinking to improve your ability to assess the credibility of information and make better judgments.  
d.Steps in Risk Assessment – Reviews the risk assessment framework.
Session3:
e.Risk Communication (public communication) – How to talk to non-experts regarding health and environmental risks.  
f. Chemical and Compound Specific Risk Assessments – Chinese examples including chromium in capsules and cadmium in rice
Session4:
g.Causality and Critical Evaluation of Health Information – Using of Hill’s Criteria to determine causal associations between exposure and an adverse health effect.  
Session5:
h. Risk Communication with other technical professionals – Discusses ways to enhance communication on risk with other technical professionals to facilitate decision-making with a specific focus on regulators.
i.Ways to report risk:  absolute risk, comparative risk, risk ranking, risk based levels
Session6:
j.Reproductive Risks– Understanding & Minimizing the Risk
k.Thalidomide – A short lecture on the tragedy that occurred in Europe in late 1950 and early 1960.  Discusses the important of using animals for testing, particularly since we don’t do reproductive toxicity testing in women.
Session7:Cancer – Risks and Treatment
m.Lung cancer and critical thinking – A short lecture on lung cancer in non-smokers and smokers.

Discussion on setting risk-based limits for pesticides
Session9:
o.Managing the risks of risk management.  About how to be aware of and minimize other risks that are created or increased as the result of reducing another risk.
