教学大纲 The course will explore the interaction of historical and cultural events, political priorities, rapid economic development, changing gender relations, international political ambitions, sports system and women’s sport in the course of the six decades of PRC.

Session 1:  Overview of Women, Sport and Society in China:
From Dominated Domestic to Olympic Champion Date:
This session provides a framework for analysing women’s sport in China, from historical traditions, social, economic and political systems, sports policy, administration, investment to personal motivation, commitment of athletes and coaches, and family support.
Students need to get familiar with basic concepts such as national identity, gender, Confucianism and Tiyu.
Group discussions will be arranged for the reasons of women’s success in sport.

Session 2: Women, Society and Sport from 1840s to date
This is the main session of the course. It will consist of 7 themes related to specific time periods. The purpose of this session is to reveal the changing social, political and economic situations over time and their impacts on women’s sport, with particular emphasis on the new China system, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution and Beijing Olympics.

1. What impact did school education have on women’s sport?
2. What is footbinding? And when it was practiced?
3. How footbinding came to end?
4. What were the characteristics of China’s sports management and training systems in the 1950s?
5. what effect did the GLF have on the subsequent decades of Chinese elite sport, women’s elite sport in particular?
6. What was the Red Guard Movement and its impact on sport?
7. What was the Rustication Campaign and what impact did it have on both women in society and sportswomen and their elite sport?
8. What impact did the economic reform and opening up policy has on women and sport?
9. What opportunities and challenges were faced with women in the market-driven society?
10. What is the relationship between women and the Beijing Olympic Games?

Proceeding of the Course
Students are expected to complete all required readings prior to class meetings and discussions. Prepare a PPT document before his/ her presentation. The order of presentation is determined by the rotation of students.
Assignments (paper or other forms)
Writing two papers: one with the assigned topic: Women, Society and Sport in Maoist China; one with self-selected topic related to Chinese women’s sport.
