The aims of this Critical Thinking Discussion Class are as follows:
1. Cultivate students` love and understanding of the treasures of mankind cultural heritage.
2. Establish the capability of rational, critical and creative thinking.
3. Understand the fundamental issues of humanity, arts and sciences.
4. Encourage critical thinking with depth.
The discussion spans a wide range of fields, such as Chinese and World Literature, history and philosophy, science and technology, music, visual arts and architecture. Students are expected to use critical thinking method to learn and discuss the above topics.

北大培育的是各行各业的领军人物。 他们必须具有扎实的专业基础，但是在此之上，还需要有杰出的理性思维，批判性思维，创造性思维的习惯和能力。这些能力的培养是多方面的，其中一部分是可以用课堂讨论的形式来完成。 本课程就是为了这个目的而开设。
元培博雅班是为期两个学期的一个明辨性思维讨论小组。讨论小组 人数为16人， 一部分是自愿报名的元培学生，一部分是从各院系具培养潜质的优秀生 。讨论班每两周活动一次，每次4个小时，课外阅读、思考和写作每周约2-5个小时，2学分。
I. 博雅班的宗旨是师生共同探讨：
1. 启发学生对人类思想文化宝库经典瑰宝的深入理解和由衷热爱；
2. 培养他们的理性思维，批判性思维和创造性思维的能力和习惯；
3. 帮助学生建立对各个领域的根本性问题的理解和欣赏；
4. 获得具有思维深度的宽广视野。
II. 博雅班师生共同学习的对象是文明的四大支柱， 即：

III. 博雅班师生共同学习的方法对上述领域的原著进行明辨性深入阅读、交叉思考、讨论辩论、最后编写论述文章成为“思考与心路” 文集。
IV. 博雅班第一学期的课程需要学习逻辑与明辨性思维的基本方法， 包括：
? Critical thinking
? History of logic
? Persuasive speech
? Basics of argumentation
? Refutation
? Critical questioning
? Debate categories: parliament debate, policy debate, and political debate
e) 当学生有了这些基本的明辨性思维和讨论、辩论方法后， 我们将对中外文学、中外历史与哲学、科学、音乐、绘画与建筑加以审视， 并对重要的问题进行深入讨论。

3.6 A critical review of Buddhism and its impact in Chinese history
3.7 A critical review of the contemporary Chinese history: late Qin dynasty and modern China
3.8 A critical review of the origin and fundamentals of Judaism, Christianity and Islam
3.9 A critical review of the work by Adam Smith, John Locke, John Mills: the foundations of contemporary Western Civilization

讨论班每两周活动一次，每次4个小时，课外阅读、思考和写作每周约2-5个小时。
课堂的参与占40%；回家作业占60%。
