For our knowledge of Europe’s past in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, we rely to a large extent on documentary and literary texts written in Latin.
OUTLINE
For our knowledge of Europe’s past in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, we rely to a large extent on documentary and literary texts written in Latin. In view of that, it is vital for any historian conducting research on the ancient or medieval history of Europe to have the ability to understand Latin to some degree. Although it is tempting to disregard Latin texts in light of fact that a great number of the works transmitted to us have been translated into modern European languages (English in particular), translations frequently contain inaccuracies and almost always fail to acknowledge textual corruptions. For this reason, it is important to consult a critical edition of a classical or Medieval Latin text. This course aims to provide you with the necessary baggage to read Latin texts yourself.
PURPOSE
The intended learning outcomes of this course are:
- To have sufficient knowledge of Latin morphology and syntax to read original Latin;
- To have the ability to identify syntactical constructions of Latin;
MATERIAL
The handbooks used for this course is:
- Frederick M. Wheelock and Richard A. LaFleur, Wheelock’s Latin (7th ed. New York [NY] 2011).
PREPARATION FOR CLASS
- Revise grammar and vocabulary of the section to be discussed in class
- Complete the homework – consisting of both exercises and sentences in the relevant chapters. The teacher will communicate homework at the end of each class to you.
