诗歌历来被认为是文学的娇宠。中国文学如此，英国文学也不例外。在小说出现以前，诗歌在英国一直是主导的文学门类，其成就令人叹为观止。本课程按时间顺序，介绍十五位大诗人，他们分别是：乔叟、斯宾塞、莎士比亚、邓恩、赫伯特、弥尔顿、布莱克、华兹华斯、柯勒律治、拜伦、雪莱、济慈、丁尼生、布朗宁、艾米莉.勃朗特，上起十四世纪末，下至十九世纪末，力图展现英诗近五百年的发展轨迹。目的是激发学生对诗歌的兴趣，培养对英文诗歌的鉴赏能力，提高学生的英文水平和文化素养。

Poetry is never short of readers. This is true of China, as is the case with Great Britain. Before fiction made its debut in the 18th century, poetry had been the most favored genre. Given the large quantity of poems in history, this course focuses only on the works of 15 major poets (Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Donne, Herbert, Milton, Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Tennyson, Browning, and Emily Bronte), spanning five centuries. By the end of term, students will be enabled to catch a glimpse of the breadth, depth and wealth of British poetry.

In general, each session will be devoted to the intense study of one major poet’s work, including his or her poetry, prose and relevant criticism. Everyone is required to make a 5-min presentation and expected to take an active part in class discussion. There will be no final exam for this course, but there are two assignments (not necessarily academic) or poems to be submitted before the last session. Since this is a poetry appreciation course, one would be well-advised to make a reasonable balance between purely impressionistic statement and cerebrally analytical treatise.
