英文简介 一、基本目的
This course aims to equip students with the research and scientific writing skills to prepare high-quality research papers. The student will broadly understand the processes involved in scientific publishing and gain practical skills in manuscript preparation, cover letter writing, and handling peer review.


二、内容提要及学时分配
The course will cover three broad areas where students will learn: how to critically assess scientific literature, how to fluently communicate technical concepts (written and oral), and promote their research to a broad audience. The course content will be divided into six modules as follows:

1.Why publish?(1学时)
了解:brief history of publishing and future trends, appreciate the necessity of publishing good science and research.

2.How to critically assess a paper(5学时)
了解:reading technical manuscripts, building a comprehensive collection of research papers
掌握:the structure of a research paper, how to assess the importance of new research in the context of the state of the art

2.1  The anatomy of a research paper
2.2  How to assess a research field (+ workshop)
2.3  How to assess impact of a paper (+ workshop)

3.How to write a great paper(12学时)
了解:writing clearly and fluently, intuitive figure and graphic design, effective poster design, how to contextualise your new results against previous work
掌握:the importance of outlines to structure ideas, top-down and bottom-up communication, the importance of effective communication

3.1  Outlining your research (+ workshop)
3.2  Writing titles and abstracts (+ workshop)
3.3  Writing an introduction and conclusion (+ workshop)
3.4  How to prepare figures and graphics (+ workshop)
3.5  How to design a poster


4.How to publish a great paper (5学时)
了解:cover letter writing, how to prepare an effective response letter to reviewers
掌握:the publication process, ethics of publishing, the role of an editor, the peer review process, how to choose the right journal/outlet for your research

4.1  Why publish? (reminder from lecture 1)
4.2  What does an editor do?
4.3  Where to publish?

4.4  Preparing your paper for submission; cover letter, supplementary information (+ workshop; cover letter writing)  
4.5  Peer review (+ workshop; preparing rebuttals)
4.6  Dealing with rejection
4.7  Ethics in publishing and research misconduct


5.How to promote your research(3学时)
了解:writing press releases, giving presentations
掌握:the role of the press/journalists, the importance of outreach and communicating to a broad audience,   

5.1  Where to present your work?
5.2  Giving a talk
5.3  How to promote your work (+ workshop)

6.Student symposium(6学时)
了解:presenting an overview of research, presenting posters
掌握:the importance of networking, how to engage audiences

6.1  Oral presentations
6.2  Poster presentations


三、教学方式
The course will be made up of 26 hours of lectures and of practical writing workshops, and 6 hours dedicated to a student symposium of short talks (lightning talks) and a poster session.

四、学生成绩评定方法
attendance (30%), written reports (20%), written exam (50%) involving reading a paper and answering multiple choice questions about the paper- also some general questions about publishing. Semester score assessment will be based on: workshop and student symposium
