中文简介 本课程帮助学生了解中国新闻传播媒体的发展状况,及其对中国社会的影响。内容涵盖不同类型的媒体,从传统的平面媒体、广播电视到最新的网络媒体在中国的发展情况,以及中国与世界在新闻传播领域的交流互动情况,讨论新闻传播媒体的发展对中国社会文化的影响。
英文简介 This course offers a general overview of journalism and communications in China, with a focus on the Mainland China. Media in other parts of Greater China, including Hong Kong and Taiwan will also be addressed.  It will familiarize the students with the developments traditional and new media iin China. Based on an understanding of the development and current media landscape, the course will take a comparative look into the role of the media in Chinese society. It will also look into the process and impact of China's interaction with the outside world in the realm of media and communication, including international media coverage about china and how the outside world is covered by Chinese correspondents.

教学大纲 This course aims to familiarize the students with the developments traditional and new media iin China. Based on an understanding of the development and current media landscape, the course will take a comparative look into the role of the media in Chinese society. It will also look into the process and impact of China`s interaction with the outside world in the realm of media and communication, including international media coverage about china and how the outside world is covered by Chinese correspondents.
Week 1-2: overview of China’s media landscape; Explore the evolution of China’s media system.

Week 3-4: Media reform and commercialization: Background and impacts

Week 5-6: Media and Society in China: Print Media

Week 7-8: Media and Society in China: Electronic Media

Week 9-10: Internet, Social Media and State-Society Relations in China

Week 11-12: Media and the Reunification of Greater China

Week 13-14: Internationalization: Foreign Media in China

Week 15-16: Internationalization: China’s global Communication Initiatives

Week 17: Field Trip / Guest Lecture.
讲授与讨论相结合。
课堂参与25%, 读书报告及课堂小测验25%, 期末论文50%。Grading will be made according to Class Participation (25%), Book reports and Quizzes (25 %), and Final Report/Essay (50 %).
