Human species is only one part of the ecosystem on Earth. Observing in the out space, far away from the Earth, you can find a great many of relations, between the human and the other living creatures, between the human and non-living things, and the complicated relations between species, between living and non-living things. All these relations should be concerned while solving the environmental issues. How to describe and distinguish the moral or ethical principles between human being and the environment systematically and orderly? That’s the aim of this lecture. Not according to the time dimension, by which one can orderly distinguish the ethical theories but may feel puzzled, a more specified method was used to distinguish so many theories, just like in mathematics, from point to point, point to line, point to surface, point to solid. There are 13 lectures in the lesson, three or four discussions among them.
Lecture 1: basics of the environmental ethics.
Lecture 2: natural law, including Aristotle’s teleology, some viewpoints of Lao-tzu and Chuang Tzu’s, and some modern scientific tradition of the natural law.
Lecture 3: Deontology. The concept of moral standing is introduced. From the environmental moral standing to the environmental legislation.
Lecture 4: Utilitarianism, the current worldwide mainstream methodology, is introduced. Most strategy is done according to this method. Does the free market theory work well?
Lecture 5: Human population the environment. Too many people? The biggest environmental problem? Do we have duty to our future generation?
Lecture 6: Animal rights and welfare, which have already induced so many people to become Environmentalists. Peter Singer and Tom Regan should be known.
Lecture 7: An independent issue. Empathy, its action and function in the environmental ethics.
Lecture 8: Taylor’s Biocentrism. The intrinsic value of life
Lecture 9: Ecocentrism，which extend the moral standing to the ecosystem.
Lecture 10: Leopold’s land ethic. He recommends “think like a mountain”.
Lecture 11: Deep ecology. The deep ecology platform will be introduced.
Lecture 12: Social Ecology and Ecofeminism, their thinking ways, from the domination to order of the environment
Lecture 13: Environmental Pragmatism, based on the moral pluralism, will be introduced. How does a typical environmental strategy decision go on
The contents of the lectures can be found in the textbook An introduction to the Environmental Ethics. A thirty-minute video, which is usually about the nature and environment all over the world, is shown before the lecture begins.

人类这个物种在地球生态系统中只是其一个组成部分。假设你身处太空，以局外观察者的角度看地球，你会发现，人类与生态系统中的其它生物物种、非生物物种之间存在广泛的联系，这些联系一直扩大到抽象的物种之间，它们都是影响环境问题的因素。在如此纷繁复杂的联系前面，如何系统而有条理地阐述人与自然环境之间的伦理道德关系，这是本课程的主要努力目标。本课程打破了按时间区分不同环境伦理理论的传统做法，转而用更明确更具体的如数学上点对点、点对线、点对面、点对体的做法论述这种关系。为适合讲授，课程内容分为13讲，中间穿插课堂讨论或辩论。
第1讲首先介绍环境伦理学的基本概念，还包括环境伦理学中科学事实与价值判断之间的关系。第2讲到第13讲分别是各专题。考虑到即使很古老的伦理思想在当代仍然有强大的生命力，也考虑到伦理道德的多元化的特点，每一讲都可以独立于其它讲，学生可从中体会人类伦理观念的转变。
第2讲介绍自然法则的环境伦理思想，包括亚里士多德的观点、老子、庄子的观点以及近代自然科学中对自然法则的传承。
第3讲介绍道义论，从康德的道义论出发，提出道德身份概念，进而到环境立法问题。
第4讲介绍当今世界主流的功利主义思想，大量的环境决策是根据这种伦理观点进行的。作为人类发展最成功的市场化给环境带来了什么样的影响。
第5讲讨论人口与环境问题。人口问题是最大的环境问题吗？我们对后代应当负起责任吗？
第6讲介绍已经引发环境保护主义者行动的动物权利，主要是辛格的动物解放和里根的动物权利学说。
第7讲为相对独立的专题，介绍移情对于环境伦理的贡献。
第8讲介绍泰勒的生物中心主义，主要是生命的内在价值论述。
第9讲内容为生态中心主义，把道德身份扩展到生态系统。
第10讲为利奥波德的土地伦理学说，介绍他的“像大山一样思考”的整体论。
第11讲为深生态学，主要介绍深生态学平台，属于环境行动论的内容。
第12讲为社会生态学和生态女性主义，从人类的统治支配方式入手讨论环境问题的根源。
第13讲为以道德多元论为基础的环境伦理实用主义，介绍环境决策的方法。
课程内容与教材《环境伦理概论》完全同步，课前一般有30分钟的自然环境方面的录像（不占用上课时间）
课堂讲授13次，讨论6次，小论文2篇，期末大论文1篇，开卷考试1次（期末正式）
分数计算：课堂参与15分，讨论20分，大小论文50分，开卷考试15分
